About Brian Carl, OD

Undergraduate Education: Wilkes University 1992-Bachelor of Science in Biology . Optometry School: PA College of Optometry in 1995-Doctor of Optometry. Professional Achievements and Associations: American Optometric Association; PA Optometric Association; Central PA Optometric Society; Infantsee Program. Clinical Certifications and Specialties: MiSight Specialty Contacts; Geriatrics and Pediatrics; Multifocal soft contacts. The reason I became an optometrist is: I have worn glasses since the fourth grade and every time I visited the eye doctor, I left seeing better than when I came in. Sometimes I did not even realize that vision needed improvement. The entire experience in all those years was always very positive. My favorite part of helping my patients is: Treating them like family and educating them that your eye health is just as important as how you see with your corrective lenses. In my spare time, I enjoy: Spending time with family, watching sports-Phillies, Eagles, and Penn State.

Professional Achievements and Associations: Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry; Member of Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honorary; Member of the American Optometric Association (Cornea and Contact Lens Section member); Member of the West Virginia Association of Optometric Physicians (past member of the board in various offices and committees); For 10 years was a Clinical Examiner for the National Optometry Board Part III. Clinical Certifications and Specialties: Cited by PCO for Excellence in Pediatric Care; Certified in the Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease; Certified in Advanced Ocular Therapeutics and Systemic Medications; Interests in myopia management, dry eye management, and the treatment of eye disease and injury. The reason I became an optometrist is: During the summer between 3rd and 4th grade, I had to get my first pair of glasses. I hadn't known that I was not seeing things that I should, and I never complained, but when I said I couldn't read the menu to my little sister at Burger King, my father got worried. When I went to the optometrist, I was so scared, and I cried so much! But then when we picked up my new glasses, we went for a picnic lunch at a scenic overlook, and I couldn't hardly eat because I was amazed that I could see houses in the valley and leaves on the tree! Soon after my girl scouts group did a trip to an eye doctor's office, and ever since then I said I wanted to be an optometrist and stuck with that goal throughout school. My favorite part of helping my patients is: - There is no better reward than when you can do something to improve a person’s quality of life by helping them function more comfortably and see more clearly. I love it so much when patients tell me that they have never had an eye examination that was so thorough and that they appreciate how I have explained things to them in a way they understand. In my spare time, I enjoy: I have been active in robotics and STEM education in our area and was a founding member and president of West Side Robotics, a group to encourage and support teams and clubs using robotics to inspire learning in kids. I coached LEGO Robotics and VEX Robotics teams for eight years, leading several teams to state level competition awards. I served as a volunteer at the VEX Worlds competition. I also have been a board member of our high school band boosters’ program, and a supporter of the high school soccer team, as my sons have made their way through high school. With my youngest now graduating, I will miss being a part of that!
